Since I'm not able to take all the requests and commisions you ask to me, I wanted to get together some of you, artists looking for clients, with some of those clients who are looking for someone who designs your tattoo or do portrait work, or covers for books, etc. I'm not specialized in portraiture (in fact I hate to do it and I love how other artists do portraits) and I stopped time ago to take tattoo commisions (sorry, overwhelmed).

I keep receiving the same questions all the time: "Hey how can I sell my art, how can I enter in the T-shirt bussiness?", so even I'm not the most experienced or skilled artist in the T-shirt industry, I'll try my best to give some answers in a single post.
Also, I'll keep this post updated as I receive suggestions from art pals that I find important to you.

There's two kind of ways to go in T-shirt bussiness* as an independant designer, and both are quite compatible with each other.
Daily tee sites (such as Teefury, Teevillain, etc,) and ordinary online shops (such as Teepublic, Neatoshop, Redbubble, etc).
*Ok there's other ways such as commisioned T-shirt designs and licenses, but I'll talk about that in other post.

Teefury famous models!

DAILY TEE SITES – They usually work in screenprinting technique (know more of this >>LINK<<).
Each color goes in a screen, so they are applied layered. Each ink in a separate screen. Each color in a photoshop (or Illustrator) layer. Merge only the layers that are same colour, keep the others separated. If the daily tee site of your choice approves your design, you will need to send out your psd file with separated layers to them.

- Selection system: they have curators that select or decline works in order their interests or schedule. You need to wait a declination or approval mail.

- How to do it? Well it may not be easy, but there are some tutorials or processes to start in youtube. If you’re interested in start a design with color separation from scratch, paint each color in transparent layers. If your work aren’t plain inks, you may need to play with halftones. A color palette on a separate layer, on the side of your design, will help you to keep yourself sticked to the color limit.

I hope all this helps!

Remember to paint those gradients over transparent layer (use the brush or layer opacity to play with the gradients), and keep all the same colour layers near. Avoid to have different colours among your other ones. I mean, if you have two red layers, don’t work a black one between them. This was one of mi common mistakes lol. I have a moderate knowledge about Tee game, but when I started I didn’t know a thing! So a lot of shit happened.

Halftone size varies a lot from one site to another, so read their guidelines! The recommended size for every site is: ROUND, size 45 angle 22. Other sites will allow you to go as far as 55 size 22 angle. The larger you set the size, the smaller the dots.

Recommended file size: Work large (17x12 inches may be fine) and 300ppp! BUT work your halftones ONLY in the size of the Daily Tee site you want to submit it. Do not resize halftones. You need to re-do your halftones in order to submit to another tee site which requirements are other file size.

Keep your original files! Don’t delete the unhalftoned layers! If needed, keep them in a separate file. You may need to change the halftone size for the different dailies, or they may require you the original file (unhalftoned). Nobody wants to paint twice their design, so bear that in mind. I made this mistake A LOT. 

- Maximum colours allowed in daily tee sites varies from one to another. Teefury color limit is 7. Teevillain 6. Some others only allows a maximum of 5. Check their guidelines and try to not use more than 5-6 colours for design if your goal is to work with them.

- Daily tee sites to work: Teefury, Teevillain, Qwertee, RIPTapparel, ShirtPunch, TheYeTee, TeeNOW, TeeTee

- If your works are executed in traditional technique instead digital, the color separation may can’t be done (unless you learn color separation to pick the colours apart), but some daily tee sites such as Teefury and Teevillain are skilled and if they’re interested on your design, they will make themselves the color separation. For this, you only need to make your submission as usual, following the requirements that Teefury or Teevillain provide, and adding in design notes that your design needs color separation.

- Teefury collections have two printing ways: screenprinting for the designs that sells a lot (screenprinting is cheaper to print hundreds of T-shirts, but not to printing a few ones) and DGT digital printing for the collections that sells moderately. So some collections doesn’t require color separation. Collections sells in time longer than the daily tee feature and has a higher commission, even them usually doesn't have the same impact as single sale designs.

- Commisions: They usually pay 1$ or 1€

- Product type: usually they sell only tees, but sites such as Teefury and others expanded their game to leggings, shoes, even mugs and prints.

- How to promote? Remember to keep for you your sale date and announce it only 1-2 days before the sale. This keeps your fans engaged and it’s less confusing. A giveaway it’s always nice!

- Exclusivity: NO, unless stated. And if they state it, see if it suits you. You don’t need to say yes to everything. If the site sells well, exclusivity may be a thing to be considered, but if not, don’t fear to say NO, so you can run your designs into other dailies. But this isn’t the usual in the daily tee sites (f.e Shirt.Woot has exclusivity agreements that may or may not suit you).

- REMEMBER: Do NOT upload the same design to a lot of dailies until you get a declination mail. If they approve your design and give you a printing date that matchs with other daily site, your relations with them may grow colder. Be polite and play your game smart. Anyway, as I said, these sales are quite compatible (unless they state it straight to you)  to keep your designs in your online shops after, before and meanwhile your sale goes on.

- The tip: In spite there’s no trick that helps to being picked, there’s a sure thing: they sell pop culture apparel, so if you’re into pop culture as well, you have more chances to be selected. Be polite, keep good relationships with art directors and art pals, grow a healthy community.



ONLINE SHOPS – They work in DGT or direct-to-garment technique (some others such as Live Heroes – all over printing- use sublimation). It works like a inkjet printer but cooler.
There’s no color limit, so you shall no worry about that. Just make sure your designs are png with transparent background to not have the tees printed with a white square with your design on it.
For prints and posters, you can edit your file and add a background later.
For Live Heroes, you may want to try with an image that includes a fancy background, because there’s no chance to pick a tee colour.

- Selection system: You’re your own curator. Just register, follow their guidelines and start uploading your works.

- How to do it? There’s no color limit! Just keep your designs with organic forms, it’s recommendable to not upload them squared as if you were mean to print a poster. If you’re interested in selling printed tees, the more attractive designs are the ones that doesn’t feature art squared. It usually requires a png to avoid the backgrounds. Indeed, each online tee shop usually have separate sections to upload your designs with your own background to sell prints and posters and such. Keep your backgrounded designs for that. AND do not get discouraged if the first year you don’t sell a cookie. It takes time. Take care of the tags to get your work easily found! If it’s a pop culture design, avoid direct references.

Keep the size large! Remember that some online shops (such as Society6) may require your files to be 300ppp and up to 10000 or 7000px in its larger side. Larger prints on DGT tees are the ones in Design By Hümans, about a DinA3 size.

Transparent background and to save it as png file is the way to go

- Online shops to work with: Teepublic, Neatoshop, Redbubble, DesignByHümans, Society6, LiveHeroes (for “all over” printed apparel), Modify Watches (for watches)

- Commision: They usually pay from 2$-2€ to 4$-4€ for tee sold, it varies from one online shop to another. It also depends wich product has been sold. Commisions for leggings, throw blankets, hoodies and phone cases are higher.

- Product type: It depends on the site, but you can offer tees, hoodies, racerback tanks, leggings, throw blankets, phone cases, notebooks and journals, studio pouches… check all the options!

- How to promote? Online shops usually offers deals from time to time that are very useful to promote your shops. From % discount to free shipping you can offer a wide range of cool deals to your followers. It's also a way (along the giveaways) to show some kind of gratitude, to allow your cool audience to get your designs for cheap so they can save some bucks.

Stay tuned to their newsletters and shops announcements. Again, giveaways are recommended, and a wise use of hastaghs when applicable.

- Exclusivity: NO, unless stated. And unless the shop beats asses selling like cookies, I don’t recommend to take exclusivities. Anyway It’s up to you.

- Remember: Share your online shops moderately. You want to sell, but also you don’t want to lose followers but keep them engaged. A lot of spam bothers everyone! Be polite, and prepared to solve your customers questions. If it’s a question about their orders, address them straight to ask the online shop.
Some shops may give you a sample for you to see their quality. But for others you shall buy your own samples. It’s good to know what are you selling!

- The tip: Keep your shops updated and take advantage of the promotions. Try to sell your designs on several shops at once, since each one of them offers different apparel (and may aim different targets), shipping options and deals that may interest some of your followers, and some others not. If you keep several shops active, you may benefit for a diverse income that comes from your followers AND the shop’s followers. Each customer find your designs in very different ways so by limit yourself to one or two shops only, will not make an interesting and diversified income. But keep it real: pick well who you work with, because we artists are commited  to our work and busy dealing with real life as everyone else! so we don’t have all the time to spend managing a large amount of shops. After some time you’ll find wich shops are worth to be kept. It’s all a matter of experience and time. And you’ll find as well wich shops suits your style best.

Sigo recibiendo el mismo tipo de preguntas todo el rato: "Hey cómo puedo vender mi arte, cómo puedo entrar en el negocio de las camisetas?", así que a pesar de que no soy la más experimentada ni la más hábil artista de camisetas, voy a intentar darlo todo para dar las respuestas en un único post.

Mantendré también este post actualizado a medida que los compañeros me pasen más info que encuentre importante para vosotros.

El primer consejo es que os esforcéis en mejorar vuestro nivel de inglés, al menos el de lectura. Mi inglés es macarrónico pero suficiente para no meterme en líos ni en negocios que no me interesen. Si no vais muy bien de inglés no sabréis cómo tenéis que subir un diseño a X sitio, por ejemplo. Simple y llanamente. Bueno, al lío.

Hay dos formas de introducirse en el negocio de las camisetas como diseñador independiente*, y ambas son perfectamente compatibles una con la otra.
Sitios de camisetas diarias o daily tee sites (como Teefury, Teevillain, etc) y tiendas online normales (como Redbubble, Neatoshop, etc)
*ok hay más formas de trabajar en camisetas como los encargos o las licencias, de eso hablaré en otro post.

Los archiconocidos modelos de Teefury!

SITIOS DE CAMISETAS DIARIAS: Normalmente trabajan en serigrafía (más sobre esto aquí >>LINK<<).
Cada color es aplicado en una pantalla, así que las capas de color se suceden una tras otra. Cada tinta en una pantalla. Cada color en una capa de Photoshop (o Illustrator). Combina unicamente las capas que tienen el mismo color, mantén las otras separadas. Si el sitio de camis diarias aprueba tu diseño, tendrás que enviarlo en un psd con las capas separaditas.

- Sistema de selección: Director de arte o selectores que se encargan de seleccionar o rechazar trabajos según sus intereses o agenda. Necesitas esperar un mail de aprobación o declinación.

- Cómo hacerlo? Bueno puede no ser sencillo, pero hay algunos tutoriales y procesos en Youtube que puede ser de utilidad para empezar. Si estáis interesados en comenzar un diseño con separación de color desde el principio, pinta cada color sobre una capa transparente. Una paletita de color en una capa diferente, a un lado de tu diseño, te ayudará a mantenerte fiel al límite de colores.
Si tu diseño no está hecho en tintas planas, tendrás que jugar con semitonos.

Grabaré otro más breve, detallado, actualizado y justo dentro de poco, pero mientras tanto, "pa vosotros tenéis" >>LINK<<
Espero que sean de ayuda!

Recuerda pintar esos degradados sobre una capa transparente (usa la opacidad del pincel o de la capa para jugar con los degradados), y mantén las capas del mismo color cerca. Evita trabajar colores diferentes entre capas del mismo color. Quiero decir, si tienes dos capas rojas no trabajes una negra en medio de las dos. Este era otro de mis errores habituales xddd. Tengo un conocimiento moderado del mundo de las camis, pero cuando empecé no sabía un pimiento. Así que la cagaba mucho todo el rato.

El tamaño de los semitonos varía de un sitio de camisetas diarias  a otro, así que leed sus especificaciones técnicas! El tamaño recomendado para todos los sitios es redondo, tamaño 45 ángulo 22. En otros sitios te permitirán enviar diseños con un tamaño de semitonos de 50 ó 55 y ángulo 22. Cuanto más grande el número al que configures el tamaño, más pequeños saldrán los puntitos.

Tamaño de archivo recomendado: trabaja en grande (17 x 12 pulgadas estaría bien) y 300dpi! Pero los semitonos trabájalos solo en el tamaño del sitio de camisetas diarias donde quieras enviar tu diseño. No redimensiones tu diseño con los semitonos hechos. Tienes que rehacer tus semitonos cada vez que quieras enviar a un sitio de camis diferente (o, al menos, cuando aprueben para impresión tu diseño).

Mantén los archivos originales! No elimines las capas sin semitonos! Si es necesario, guárdalas en un archivo diferente. Podrías necesitar cambiar el tamaño de semitonos para cada daily o pueden llegar a pedirte el archivo original sin semitonos. Nadie quiere tener que pintar dos veces el mismo diseño, así que ten eso en mente. Yo he cometido este error un montón de veces.

- El color máximo permitido de un sitio de camisetas diarias a otro varía de uno a otro. El límite de Teefury es 7. El de Teevillain 6. Otros tienen un máximo de 5. Ojea sus especificaciones técnicas para no utilizar más de 5-6 colores si lo que quieres es trabajar con ellos.

- Sitios de camisetas diarias con los que trabajar: Teefury, Teevillain, Qwertee, RIPTapparel, ShirtPunch, TheYeTee, TeeNOW, TeeTee

- Si tus trabajos están hechos en técnica tradicional en lugar de digital, la separación de color no se puede hacer (a menos que aprendas separación de colores para seleccionar a parte cada tinta), pero algunos sitios de camis diarias como Teefury o Teevillain son muy hábiles y si están interesados en tu diseño, separarán ellos mismos los colores. Para esto solo necesitas rellenar el formulario de forma normal, siguiendo las especificaciones que Teefury o Teevillain proveen, y añadiendo en notas de diseño que "this design needs color separation" (este diseño necesita separación de color).

- Las Teefury Collections tienen dos formas de imprimirse: en DGT o impresión digital para los diseños que se venden de forma moderada, y serigrafía para los que venden a cascoporro. La serigrafía es barata para imprimir tropecientos diseños, pero para imprimir unos pocos es más asequible la impresión digital. Así que algunos diseños para colecciones no requieren separación de color. Las ventas de colecciones duran más tiempo y la comisión es mayor, aunque el impacto de ventas nunca es tan grande como vender la camiseta en plan diaria.

- Comisión por venta: Los dailies ofrecen 1$ ó 1€.

- Tipo de producto: normalmente venden solo camisetas, pero sitios como Teefury y otros han expandido su juego a leggins, zapatos, incluso tazas y posters.

- ¿Cómo promocionarlas? Recuerda guardar para ti la fecha de impresión hasta 1-2 días antes de la venta, luego puedes anunciarla. Esto mantiene a tus fans más interesados y es menos confuso. Y un sorteo siempre es guay!

- Exclusividad:  NO, a menos que lo especifiquen. Y si lo hacen, mira a ver si te conviene. No necesitas decir sí a todo. Si el sitio vende bien, la exclusividad puede ser una cosa a considerar, pero si no, no temas decir NO, así puedes rotar tu diseño por otros dailies. Pero esto no es lo habitual en algunos sitios de camis (p.e Shirt.Woot tienen acuerdos de exclusividad que pueden o no convenirte)

- RECUERDA: NO subas el mismo diseño a un montón de dailies hasta que obtengas un mail de rechazo. Si aprueban tu diseño y coincide con la fecha de impresión de otro sitio de camis donde vayan a sacar ese mismo arte, tus relaciones se enfriarán con ellos. Se educado y juega inteligentemente. De todos modos, como he dicho, esas ventas son perfectamente compatibles (a menos que ellos te lo comenten directamente) a mantener tus diseños en tus tiendas online antes, después y durante tu venta en el daily.

- El consejo: A pesar de que no hay truco para ser escogido, hay una cosa segura: venden prendas de cultura pop, así que si te va ese rollo tienes más opciones de ser seleccionado. Se educado, mantén buenas relaciones con los directores de arte y otros compañeros de profesión, ayuda a que nuestra comunidad crezca saludable.


TIENDAS ONLINE: Trabajan en DGT o impresión digital (otras como Live Héroes trabajan en sublimación). Funciona como una impresora de inyección de tinta pero más guay.
No hay límite de color, así que no tienes que preocuparte de eso. Simplemente asegúrate de que tus diseños son png's con fondo transparente para que tus camis no se impriman con un recuadro blanco en él.

- Sistema de selección: Tú eres tu propio selector. Tan solo tienes que registrarte, seguir sus especificaciones y empezar a subir tus diseños.

- ¿Cómo hacerlo? No hay límite de color! Mantén tus diseños con formas orgánicas, es recomendable no subirlos cuadrados como si fueran para imprimir pósteres. Si estás interesado en vender camisetas, los diseños más atractivos son los que no muestran el trabajo en un rectángulo y listo. Requiere que el archivo sea en png para evitar recuadros de fondo. Por supuesto, cada tienda online tiene secciones donde subir tus diseños como prints y pósters y otras cosas. Guarda los fondos de tus diseños para eso. Y no te desanimes si no vendes una rosquilla! Lleva su tiempo. Cuida las etiquetas para que tu trabajo sea facilmente encontrado! Si es un diseño de cultura pop, evita las referencias directas.

Mantén el tamaño grande! Recuerda que algunas tiendas online (como Societ6) requieren archivos de 300dpi y mayores a 10000 ó 7000 píxeles por su lado más largo. Los sitios que imprimen los diseños de camiseta de mayor tamaño son los de Design By Hümans, un DinA3.

- Comisión: Normalmente pagan de 2$ - 2€ a 4$- 4€ por camiseta vendida, varía de una tienda a otra. También depende del artículo vendido. Los royalties por leggins, mantas, sudaderas y carcasas de teléfono son más altas.

- Tipo de producto: Depende del sitio, pero puedes ofrecer camisetas, sudaderas, camisetas de tirantes, leggins, mantitas, carcasas para móvil, libretas y diarios, estuches.... ojea todas las opciones!

- ¿Cómo promocionarlas? Las tiendas online normalmente ofrecen ofertas de vez en cuando que son muy útiles para promocionar tus tiendas. Desde porcentajes de descuento hasta gastos de envio gratis puedes ofrecer un amplio rango de ofertas a tus seguidores. Es también una forma (junto a los sorteos) de mostrar grtitud, permitir a tu moladora audiencia que obtengan tus diseños más baratos para ahorrarse algunos juldros.

Queda al lorito de sus newsletters y anuncios de tienda. De nuevo, recomiendo los sorteos, y un uso sabio de las etiquetas o hashtags cuando sea requerido.

- Exclusividad: NO, a menos que lo especifiquen. Y a menos que lo peten vendiendo como si vendieran galletas, no recomiendo limitarte con exclusividades. De todas formas es cosa tuya.

- RECUERDA: Comparte tus tiendas con moderación. Quieres vender, pero no quieres perder seguidores sino mantenerlos implicados. Ir a tope de spam molesta a cualquiera! Se educado, y estate dispuesto a resolver las dudas de tus clientes. Si la pregunta es sobre sus pedidos, redirecciónalos a preguntar directamente a la tienda online.
Algunas tiendas te pueden proporcionar muestras gratis para ver la calidad. Pero en otras, la mayoría, tendrás que adquirir tus propias muestras. Es bueno saber qué estás vendiendo!

- El consejo: Mantén tus tiendas actualizadas y aprovecha las promociones. Intenta vender tus diseños en varias tiendas a la vez, ya que cada una de ellas ofrece productos distintos (y apunta a diferente target), opciones de envío y ofertas que pueden interesar a unos y a otros no. Si mantienes varias tiendas activas te beneficiarás de ingresos diversificados que proviene de tus seguidores Y de los seguidores de la tienda. Cada comprador llega a tus diseños por una vía diferente así que limitarte a una o dos tiendas solo, no producirá un interesante y diversificado flujo de beneficios. PERO seamos realistas: escoge bien con quién trabajas, porque los artistas estamos muy comprometidos con nuestro trabajo y ocupados, como todo el mundo, lidiando con la vida real! Así que no tenemos todo el tiempo del mundo para gastarlo gestionando mogollón de tiendas. Después de algún tiempo verás qué tiendas merecen ser mantenidas. Es cuestión de tiempo y experiencia. También verás qué tiendas van más con tu estilo.

I thought (and I was suggested to) that my weird hobby of slow life photography and styling tables for Instagram can be useful for someone more than me! It also gives me the best excuse to keep practicing this kind of photos with my smarphone and my camera. I'm not a profesional, btw, so my skills are limited. Anyway I hope you find useful for your blog those freebies. Some of them doesn't contains too much photos, but it's something.

Eng/ Some of you asked me about what tools I'm using to paint my latest work. I don't even know if this info may be helpful or interesting, but it's easier to answer this way, with fancy photos and a list for everyone! Here we go:



Algunos de vosotros me habéis preguntado sobre qué herramientas estoy utilizando para pintar mi último trabajo. No tengo ni idea de si esto podría ser útil o interesante, pero es más sencillo contestar de esta forma, con unas fotos majas y una lista para todos! Allá vamos:
